Review and Playlist : Sweet Ruin by Kresley Cole

Music inspires me as it does so many other people in this big crazy world. Many times, when I read about my author crushes it notes that they listened to a particular artist or album while writing. Well, because I fucking love books and music, I’ve decided to start adding playlists to my reviews (and who knows, maybe I’ll just make playlist reviews. I know. It’s crazy. I could do anything, right?!?). If you’re currently an 8tracks user, then you already know how freaking awesome this site/app is. If you aren’t, check it out. Promise you’ll find something you like.

So, Sweet Ruin was actually the first book I’d ever read of Kresley’s…

And I instantly fell in love with her writing and characters. Because I’d never read any of the Immortals After Dark stories, before Sweet Ruin, I didn’t know what to expect. And WOW. Was I surprised. Now that I’ve read a handful of them, I think her style could best be summarized as supernatural romance with teeth!

Sweet Ruin#4

An immortal assassin is caught between desire and duty…

A foundling raised in a world of humans

Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Her baby brother Thaddeus was as perfect as she was flawed; protecting him became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl… to would-be superhero… to enchanting, ruthless villain.

A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission

A threat to the Møriør has brought archer Rune the Baneblood to the mortal realm to slay the oldest living Valkyrie. Whether by bow or in bed, he never fails to eliminate his target. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty conceals a black heart. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, taking his forbidden blood – and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.

A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin…

Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. Despite his millennia of sexual conquests, he can’t ignore the unfamiliar longing she arouses deep within him. When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.

This book is hot. I mean, 💥HAWT!!💥 And in typical romance fashion, the sexual plot progresses rather fast. There’s lots of BANGING. LOTS. Thank you Kresley. Nobody writes sex scenes like you do.

First we’re introduced to an orphaned adolescent Joe (short for Josephine cause she’s way to street to go around dropping the name Josephine) who carries her equally orphaned baby brother, Thad, around in a backpack she’s modified with leg holes.

Then something life-changing happens to Joe, and she finds herself somewhere…strange and unearthly—without Thaddie. While adjusting to her new life, we’re introduced to Rune Darklight.

Sweet Ruin #2jpg

Rune is a Bane Blood ( which means poison blood) Møriør (—an alliance of otherworldly beings that have seized control of most planes of existence, led by Orion the Undoing). He’s a Dark Fey (a halfling born of a fey and a demon) aka Baneblood (beings with black poisonous blood) who’s a serious man-whore. He and his fellow Møriør are headed toward Gaia (earth) for good reason: an Accession (a kind of mystical checks-and-balances system for an ever-growing population of immortals that occurs every five hundred years. Or right now…). After awakening his comrades from a 500 year sleep, Rune sets forth on another mission: to find and kill Nix (Phoenix) a Primordial (the firstborn—or the oldest generation—of a species) clairvoyant Valkyrie (female immortals that take sustenance from the electrical energy of the earth, sharing it in one collective power, and give it back with their emotions in the form of lightning. They possess preternatural strength and speed and without training they can be mesmerized by shining objects and jewels) who is sentenced with plotting to overthrow the Møriør amidst the Accession.

Now, Rune isn’t your average assassin. He’s an amazingly accomplished archer that prefers to the fuck information out of people. Yes. That’s right he sucks Nymphs’ tits for tips. He lays pipe for enlightenment. And whilst bang-bargaining some extra moany Nymphs in a private New Orleans courtyard, Rune senses something “familiar” yet completely alien to him…Josephine.

“Meadowberries mixed with warm rain. Another female was nearby—and, gods almighty, her sweet scent was mouthwatering.”

And this is where I stop giving you deets and tell you to read this book. It’s so good. And if you are familiar with Kresley’s writing, or even if you aren’t, you won’t be disappointed.

Sweet Ruin sucked me in, in the best way. My thoughts were consumed with the characters and the story for days after I read it.
